Pattaya, Thailand - 2015 Dec 28

You but arrive at the city to which you were destin’d, you hardly settle yourself to satisfaction before you are call’d by an irresistible call to depart. - Walt Whitman

Back in Thailand for a bit; four hour plane flight from Bali to Bangkok ($150).

Spent Christmas Eve and Day in Bangkok. Now in Pattaya for the New Year celebration.

Next I'm going to visit the island of Koh Chang, just a 3-hour bus ride south of here.

And my last day in Bali...until next time.

Kuta Beach - 2015 Dec 21

Went on a scary snorkeling trip my last day on Gili T. Waves were the biggest I've ever seen. Read a news article that a passanger boat capsized in another part of Indonesia due to the same wave system; some killed and 80 still missing at sea. Could have easily been our little boat, I had my life vest and fins on, prepared to swim a mile to shore; very strong current, glad I didn't have to try.

Anyway, should have stayed longer on those three beautiful islands...

A full day of traveling to get back to Kuta Beach, Bali. And just in time to catch the Star Wars premiere in Indonesia!

Then to the beach for a few hours of surfing, I seem to be getting worse.

Gili Trawangan - 2015 Dec 19

Up at 6 AM to catch the shuttle bus to the marina, 1.5 hours away. The speed-boat left the dock at 9 AM, and 2.5 hours later we reached the biggest of the three islands, Gili Trawangan.

No cars or scooters here, only walking, bicycles, and horse carts.

At a normal pace, you could walk around the island in probably less than two hours, but I made the day of it and took seven hours.

Got caught in a rainstorm on the far side of the island, so I stopped under a bamboo canopy on the beach. Then I was joined by several local horse trainers.

After a while they got bored and I watched them race their horses on the beach and then bathe them in the ocean.

Kuta Beach - 2015 Dec 16

"Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here? That depends a good deal on where you want to get to, said the cat. I don't much care where, said Alice. Then it doesn't matter which way you go, said the cat." - Lewis Carroll

And just like that, nine days are gone and Anna is on a flight back to England and I'm ... All By myself...don't wanna be...

Our last few days were spent sightseeing around South Kuta, shopping, and last night we watched 30 baby sea turtles crawl down the beach into the ocean and swim away.

What to do now? My Indonesia entry stamp is good until January 4, so maybe I'll stay here on Kuta Beach and surf until after the new year. Also there are the three small Gili Islands, just a two hour boat ride away, that are begging me to explore them. They are suppose to be great for snorkeling and diving.

Bali Excursion - 2015 Dec 11

"The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience." - Eleanor Roosevelt

We hired a private driver for the day (10 hour trip) to explore the attractions near the middle of Bali.

First stop was a massive waterfall and my favorite of the day. Splashed around in the water, but didn't go under the fall, worried a log would come down and smash me on the head.

Next we drove into an ancient volcano crater for lunch and pictures. Crazy steep and narrow roads leading to the middle of the crater.

Then near the bottom, next to a giant lake, was a natural hot springs, heated by the still active volcano. We bathed here for an hour or so, very relaxing.

On the way back we stopped at a coffee plantation and enjoyed samples of all their coffee and tea. Neither Anna or I would try the coffee that is digested by this fox-like animal and then brewed.

And last stop was in Ubud, at a huge wild monkey park. The monkeys were somewhat tame and would jump on your sholders if they thought you had a banana. Ubud is the town were Elizabeth Gilbert found inspiration for her book Eat Pray Love.
